PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC
This capital city is worth visiting for the beautiful sights (Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral, Charles Bridge,
Old Town Hall with its Astronomical Clock, Vltava River - to name a few). It is an inexpensive destination and it's fairly easy to get around the city (there's a metro as well as tram system with interchangeable tickets). The currency is Czech crown (Kc).
Accommodations and meals are not as pricey as many other European countries and the people are friendly. Many that we came into contact with spoke English (thankfully, as Czech was not an easy language to figure out!). We stayed at Prague City Pension for 50 euros a night - a twin room with bath that was clean, quiet, and comfortable. Breakfast was 3 euros extra if we wanted. Cruises on the Vltava River are a good bargain and there are options for lunch and cruise, dinner and cruise with entertainment, etc.
Beers are plentiful - but of course this is where Pilsner originated! Walking around town took a bit getting used to - we got confused several times - partly I think because the street names are so unlike "Main Street" or even numbered streets - hey, try pronouncing "Sady Petatricatniku," OK?
My husband John had recently read a book that mentioned the Bone Museum at Kutna Hora so we took a day trip to this amazing church featuring sculptures made from the bones of over 40,000 people. It's quite a story and although it may seem macabre it is something I would recommend for its uniqueness. The town of Kutna Hora also has a fabulous cathedral (St. Barbara's) which was completed after 500 years of building. it is only an hour away by train so it doesn't even half to take up the whole day to visit.
Please let me know if you have any comments or suggestions. Thanks!
